The Big Apple - 1000 Hampton St, Columbia, SC 29201
Built in 1915 as the House of Peace synagogue, the building was sold in 1936 and reopened as the Big Apple Night Club, where the dance craze that swept the nation during the summer of 1937 was born. Crafted by Columbia's African-American youth, the Big Apple dance eventually traveled to New York and attracted the attention of famed dance instructor Arthur Murray and songwriter Tommy Dorsey, who wrote "The Big Apple Swing." By 1938, however, the club had closed; the property was sold, and the dance was no longer popular. Abandoned in 1979, the former club was moved three years later from its original location at 1138 Park to its current siting at the corner of Hampton and Park streets.

Lula Drake, The Pastor's Study - 1635 Main St, Columbia, SC 29201
Just like we knew something remarkable existed when we opened the attic above Lula Drake Wine Parlor in the Fall of 2016, and discovered The Pastor's Study. These rooms were first built in the late 1800s serving as a reflective space for a local Columbia pastor. The rooms had been hidden behind boarded windows and bricked over doors for over 70 years.
